Seminarian Conference

Hope for the future was the message Saint Meinrad seminarians spread as Saint Meinrad School of Theology hosted the National Catholic Seminarian Conference April 14-17. The 2005 conference, “A Future Full of Hope,” was the first since 2000, when it was hosted by St. Paul Seminary, St. Paul, MN. Saint Meinrad School of Theology previously hosted the conference in 1998 and the first conference was organized by Mundelein Seminary in 1996.

The conference presented a mix of prayer, guest speakers, small group discussions and social gatherings, all centered on the theme, “A Future Full of Hope” (Jeremiah 29:11). Also central to the conference was prayer.

The four-day conference included four keynote speakers: Cuban-born Bishop Felipe Estevez of the Archdiocese of Miami spoke on “Bringing Hope to the People of God”; Rt. Rev. Lambert Reilly, OSB, former archabbot of Saint Meinrad, talked about “Giving Priestly Identity a Future Full of Hope”; Christopher West, who teaches theology at St. John Vianney Theological Seminary in Denver and at John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family in Melbourne, Australia, presented “Giving Hope as a Healthy Celibate Priest”; and Fr. Tom Forrest, CSsR, international director of Evangelization 2000, talked about “Hope and Evangelization.”

The conference also featured breakout sessions focused on key issues within the Church, such as youth ministry and black Catholic history.
